For 2021, Pensacola Humane Society is setting a goal of helping 500 kittens during kitten season, but we need your help! The estimated cost of this is just under $34,000. This will go to providing our foster families and their kittens with all the supplies that they need. The Goal

In 2020 PHS took in 317 kittens and in 2021, we took in 333 kittens. For 2022 our goal is to be able to help 500 kittens! The estimated cost of this is just over $37,000. Kittens Need Formula!

Depending on their age, bottle fed kittens eat anywhere from 4-10 times, intaking 15-160mL of formula a DAY! Kittens do a lot of growing and changing during the first few months of life, so having a nutritional and reliable formula is essential when they do not have a mother around to give them the real thing. We have chosen Breeder’s Edge as our kitten formula and are happy with it’s ratings and nutritional value. Check out this #PHSandMe story from one of our amazing fosters Sarah "I have gone through a lot of change in my life, especially lately; being a military family, we move around a lot, and coupled with recently giving birth to my daughter, my life looks very different than it did prior to her birth. We moved across the country, I had to quit my job, and then of course COVID happened. The one thing that has always been the same has been my volunteer work fostering neonatal kittens. No matter where I am or what else is going on in the world, I can always center myself around the tiny purrs, the soft meows, and the routine of feeding them every few hours around the clock. Helping these most vulnerable of beings to survive and thrive feeds my very soul, and fulfills me in a way that no other work possibly can. It can be difficult, tiresome, and bittersweet, but knowing that I have helped to save their lives makes it all worth it. Fostering the bottle babies actually helped me to adjust to motherhood very easily; I was already used to waking up at all hours in the night to feed a tiny creature that totally relied on me! Fostering has also brought me my most amazing boy, the cat companion that I always dreamed of. Thank you to PHS for allowing me the honor of helping them truly make a difference." Rule #1: Weigh Your Kittens!

One of the most important things you can do to make sure that your kitten is healthy and thriving is weigh them! It's the easiest way to know if your kitten is eating enough or if they are sick. Kittens start out weighing about 100 grams and over the next 4 weeks should steadily gain weight until they are at the 1 pound mark.

Because of this, one of the more important items on our wish list is a digital scale that weighs in grams. Measuring your kittens weight in grams is the most accurate way to track how much they've lost or gained simply because they're so tiny! Why You Should Spay and Neuter Your Pets

Why should you spay and neuter your pets? We'll let Sarah, one of our neonate fosters, answer that question for you! By making your your pets, specifically cats, are spayed or neutered you are helping to control the amount of animals who don't have to go into shelters. Helping with TNR programs and working on getting your community cats spayed or neutered is another huge way to help control the cat population and limit the amount of cats or kittens that have to go into a shelter.

Rule #2 Keep Those Beans Warm!

One of the most crucial part of getting a kitten out of the danger zone is keeping them warm! Kittens under 5 weeks of age cannot regulate their body temperature on their own. It's also very dangerous to feed a kitten that is too cold or too hot as their bodies stop being able to properly process the formula. While a rice pack will work for short periods, and heating pads can be used but put the kitten at risk of being burned, we prefer to use Snuggle Safes! These microwave safe disks can stay warm for up to 10 hours and stay at the perfect temp to keep our babies safe and healthy without risk of burning. Let Mom Do All The Work for You

It is so important for kittens to stay with their mommas and why it's so important that we need fosters to take in nursing moms! Caring for a mama cat and her kits may seem more daunting that caring for just the kittens by themselves, but really it's like having a live in nanny! Is it time to feed the kittens? Mom is on it. Is it time to clean or stimulate the babies? Mama's here! Did the kittens get too far from the nest? Don't worry, mother will protect them. All you have to do is make sure that mom is fed and that you're weighing the kittens twice a day to make sure everyone is getting enough food.

Mom also provides so much more the kittens. While we can provide milk replacement formula for kittens without moms nothing is better for them than moms milk. Just like with human infants mom's milk provides nutrients, antibodies, and boosts their immune system. Tiny Kittens Need Tiny Homes!

Keeping your neonates warm and contained is so very important. When they're under 4 weeks one of the best places to keep them safe is a top loading cat carrier for a couple of reasons. The area is small which makes it really easy to maintain the warmth needed for kittens this age that can't regulate their own body temperature. These carriers are hard sided which helps protect them from any accidents in their environment. These are also meant to be portable, so if you're nursing neonate kittens it's so easy to bring them from room to room or what have you. Glow Worm Fosters Needed!

Did you know that ringworm isn't actually a worm? It's a fungus that got it's name from the circular rings of patchy skin that it gives its victims. While ringworm isn't the end of the world if treated, the treatment does take at least 21 days to clear up. Kittens are especially vulnerable to this ailment because of their under developed immune systems. Signing up to be a Glow Worm Foster (affectionately named because ringworm fluoresces under a black light) keeps kittens out of the shelter which protects them from any other illness or disease while their immune system is especially compromised as well as protecting any other animals from potentially being infected and causing them to miss out on their furever home.
